The next BLMA management training course will take place on 1st April at the University of Birmingham
The course is open to both BLMA members and non-members and is aimed at those who are either managing or supervising people within a laboratory setting or will soon be.
1st April 2019
9.45am Arrival and registration
10.00am Opening introduction – Jacqueline Balian BLMA
10.10am Management training part one – Chris Philips – Marcus Bonn Associates
For some of the time between 9 am and 12 noon delegates will be split into various groups
14.15 pm Management training part two - Chris Philips – Marcus Bonn Associates
15.15 pm Tea
The course will help attendees to develop the skills in the successful day to day management of a laboratory. It will address handling the day to day management of people and will consider how you can motivate, communicate and manage change in an area where often the people you are dealing with don’t always report to you directly.
The sessions will focus on participation, discussion and exploring ideas.
Group working and small workshops will give the maximum opportunity for the exchange of ideas and to develop solutions with the emphasis on useful techniques that can be applied in day to day work. The sessions will be practical, relevant and fun!

- Practical leadership skills
- Communication in the workplace
- Working with others
- Managing change
The course is run by qualified trainer Chris Phillips, BA, FInstLM, MCIPD, CMICS
Previous attendees have included laboratory managers from Universities, healthcare, industry, government and public research, utilities, pharmaceutical and life science companies. Coming from Jersey to Aberdeen and London to Belfast. All attendees have rated previous courses either excellent or very good.
